Cecilia Malmström

Cecilia Malmström has devoted the better part of her career to global affairs and international relations and has extensive experience from multilateral leadership and cooperation. She has served as European Trade Commissioner and European Home Affairs Commissioner, as well as Minister for EU Affairs in the Swedish Government.

She is currently Visiting Professor at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Since June 2021 she is a non-resident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) in Washington, DC. Ms Malmström has been a frequent guest lecturer and visiting professor at several international universities. She has authored and co-authored books and articles on European politics, Spanish politics, trade, migration, terrorism and regionalism. She obtained a PhD in political science, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1998.

Cecilia Malmström is engaged in numerous international endeavours, think tanks and foundations. She is also the co-founder of International Youth Think Tank, which brings together young people with decision-makers from industry, academia, culture, politics and civil society to discuss current global challenges. Throughout her career, she received numerous awards, including “European of the Year,” awarded by the Swedish European Movement in 2020, and in 2017 was awarded “Woman of the Year” by the Association of Women in International Trade in Washington D.C.

Cecilia Malmström is married and has two children. She currently lives in Göteborg, Sweden. She is fluent in Swedish (native), English, French and Spanish. She also has a good understanding of German, Italian, Danish and Norwegian.
